kibera water filter amenity

As part of a seminar on Ecological Urbanism, Aram and I took the idea of designed ecological experiments and applied it to urban Kenya. Because of the steep slope and lack of sanitary facilities in Kibera, circulatory paths have become open-pit sewage trenches, collecting garbage and impeding movement. In addition, this polluted runoff flows down into the Nairobi River, located just below the settlement.

We addressed these issues with a water filtration unit that provides safe circulation and a community gathering point. The urban amenity is coupled with an ecological experiment to determine the potential for cleaning runoff and reducing pollution of the nearby river.
