ndee bikiyaa greenhouse

On the White Mountain Apache Reservation in Arizona, a shift away from agriculture has led to an erosion of cultural identity and epidemic health issues, in particular diabetes and obesity. I teamed up with Alice, Timnit and Xuefeng to design a state of the art, energy efficient greenhouse as part of a locally grown, healthy foods initiative started by dedicated members of the tribe’s Hydrology Department.

The greenhouse will serve both as a nursery for plants on the growing Ndee Bikiyaa farm and as a symbol to the community of their commitment to rediscover their heritage and create positive change. This project was part of Design for Extreme Affordability 2011 at Stanford’s d.school.
